CINDERELLA IN AMSTERDAM

The title (and the above photo) say it all. I kicked off this challenge in Amsterdam on 31st December 2018 with 'Cinderella'. I've seen many, many ballets in my life (including Cinderella) but as you will soon realise, I never have enough. And I've never been to the Dutch National Opera and Ballet before.

It was a bit of a last minute decision to book the tickets as I only decided a couple of weeks before NYE to spend it in Amsterdam and what a damn good decision it was: honestly, one of the best ever ballet productions I've seen. Fantastic sets throughout, but above all, the dancing was impeccable. Great chemistry between Daniel Camargo and Igone de Jongh. I'd love to see these two in other ballets, so I'll keep my eye out for these names.

Classic, elegant but very inventive design, especially the magical pumpkin coach at the end of the first act or the dance at the palace among the sparkling chandeliers. Also very funny, when the step-mother dances 'drunk' at the ball or the Prince moves his hips like Shakira.

I'm a big fan of Russian composers and it's one of Prokofiev's best written pieces to a libretto by Nikolai Volkov. It was first performed on 21st November 1945 at the Bolshoi theatre (which is also on my list of 80 :) Though Tchaikovsky remains the number one for me, so I'm definitely coming back in March for Swan Lake.
