Embarking on a road trip through Croatia offers an adventure filled with stunning landscapes, enchanting towns and captivating history. My journey starts around the vibrant towns of Rijeka and Rovinj in the picturesque region of Istria, then ventures past the city of Split, and culminates in the iconic city of Dubrovnik, renowned as the filming location of the legendary Game of Thrones series.
RIJEKA
The charming city of Rijeka is nestled on the Kvarner Bay. The city centre itself is a bit industrial - used to be a busy port - but for breathtaking views and a bit of well earned SPA rest I recommend Hilton Rijeka Costabella Resort. Honestly, the room views were one of the best I've ever had in any hotel! Decent prices pre or post holiday season (March/ April or October/ November)

RIJEKA
As I depart from the maritime hub of Rijeka, I set my sights on the countryside wonders. The journey through Istria enchants me with rolling green hills, vineyards, and quaint villages. I head to the captivating town of Rovinj with it's postcard-worthy vistas, full of colourful houses perched on a hilly peninsula. As I wander through the winding streets of the old town, the fresh, cooling scent of the Adriatic Sea fills the air. So soothing. Again, if you have some spare euros in your pocket and don't know what to do with it...try the Grand Park Hotel

Leaving the Istrian Peninsula behind, my trip continues southwards, tracing the stunning Adriatic coastline. I make a flying visit to SPLIT, where ancient Roman history intertwines with modern life. I explore the Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and take a quick walk around the narrow streets of the old town.
DUBROVNIK
The grand finale awaits me in Dubrovnik. As I enter the city walls, I am instantly transported to the world of Westeros, the fictional realm of Game of Thrones. The iconic fortifications, cobblestone streets, and majestic architecture served as the backdrop for King's Landing in the acclaimed TV series. Exploring the town, I admire the renowned Stradun promenade, ornate churches, and picturesque squares that have witnessed centuries of history.

One cannot fully experience Croatia's coastal beauty without venturing out to sea. In Dubrovnik, a boat trip to the nearby Elafiti Islands presents a memorable opportunity to bask in the splendor of turquoise waters, hidden coves and untouched nature - hiring a boat for 4 hours was 260euro, so really not too bad! The bigger passenger boats are cheaper, but maybe not as romantic :)

For the hotel, I stayed at Hotel Dubrovnik Palace. It's a 10min drive from the centre of town, but it's got phenomenal views & great facilities. I loved the sunset by the pool, with a glass of wine.

It was my first time in Croatia but I will definitely be back (next time in a convertible;) And if anyone is wondering about the road quality - very comfortable and easy to drive on, be it local roads or motorways. And don't forget to take your passport (even if you're from the EU) as they are not part of the Schengen area.
