When one thinks of Italy, iconic cities like Rome, Florence or Venice come to mind. However, there is a hidden gem that quietly captures the hearts of those who venture off the beaten path: Perugia. Nestled in the heart of Umbria, Perugia is a captivating city that offers a unique blend of history, culture and stunning landscapes.

Perugia's history dates back to the Etruscan civilization ( around 8th-3rd BC) and the city's ancient roots are evident in its well-preserved historical landmarks. As you wander through the labyrinthine streets of the historic center, you'll encounter many architectural marvels.

Perugia's elevated position on a hilltop provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. As you step onto the city's fortressed walls, you'll be rewarded with vistas that stretch across rolling green hills, vineyards and olive groves (I’ve photographed and filmed quite a lot of city views in my life, and it’s definitely one of the top on my list!)

Italian cuisine is renowned worldwide and Perugia proudly adds its own distinct flavors to the country's culinary tapestry. Umbrian cuisine showcases simple yet flavorful dishes that highlight the region's local ingredients - from earthy truffles and artisanal cheeses to hearty dishes like porchetta (roast pork) and strangozzi (shoestring) pasta. And be sure to indulge in Perugia's famous sweet treat, Baci Perugina. These decadent chocolate hazelnut ‘kisses’ (baci means kisses in Italian) are not only delicious but also carry a ‘romantic’ tradition, as each one comes with a love note or meaningful quote tucked inside.

Although I mostly indulged on cannoli:)

Talking of chocolate, for all choclate lovers around the world, Perugia is the host of Eurochocolate Festival, an annual event dedicated to all things chocolate. Chocoholics from around the world gather to indulge in a chocolate extravaganza that includes tastings, workshops, and elaborate chocolate sculptures.

Perugia is also home to one of Italy's oldest universities, attracting a vibrant student population that adds a dynamic energy to the city. The university's presence has given rise to a thriving arts and music scene, with numerous theaters, galleries and clubs showcasing the talent of local artists. The city is also famous for its annual cultural event, the Umbria Jazz Festival, which attracts renowned jazz performers from around the world.

And for a bonus day trip, head to Assisi (famous Catholic pilgrim place, but also a stunning city perched on a cliff) . The 'home' of St Francis, patron saint of Italy and animals.

Perugia may not be the obvious choice when planning a trip to Italy, but its allure lies precisely in its hidden status. So if you fancy 'something else' for a weekend trip, Perugia and its surroundings are the way to go. Nearest airport it Perugia, but you can also fly to Florence or Rome.
